UMD Movies on the PSP

The development of the Playstation Portable was first proposed at E3 in 2003 as Sony’s first handheld gaming system. The benefits of the PSP are virtually limitless, however, there is one thing that it’s predecessor, the Playstation 2 does better: play DVDs. Sony put this thought into the creation of their new handheld genius and answered it with UMD movies.

The PSP’s Universal Media Discs were created in order to provide Sony fans one more reason to buy the PSP over Sony’s competitor, the Nintendo DS. Even though the PSP sales still lacked the impressive name of Nintendo and their sales fell behind, Sony came up with many different versions of the PSP in order to keep the consumer interested.

UMD movies brought up the slack that the PSP seemed to lack. For the family on the go, the college student or just the plain gamer, the PSP answered many calls with PSP movies. From big name titles to old classics, these mini disc movies have everything a movie buff could want.

As of last year in 2009 many big name movies continue to be released despite the cutbacks the UMD department suffered in 2006. While the Disc is primarily for movie or storage usage for PSP video games, it can also be used for TV series or other video storage. Unfortunately, the UMD’s format has been cracked at this point and there are various “homebrew” psp movies and games running around.

UMD movies are a good answer to most problems, including the family trip that seems to go on too long. Though PSP movies are the answer to many a parent’s prayers, the lack of writers and places to purchase the storage discs leaves a person no choice than to store their home movies or whatever else on a regular DVD disc.

While two name brand studios had pulled their support once the sales of these UMD movies lacked, companies like Capcom and Disney still fully support the device. These two major companies are animation and comic book based which is why most of the movies made for the disc tend to be better for younger audiences. This is what makes the PSP much more likely to be in the hands of a younger generation rather than a grown adult; at least for movie-watching purposes.
